RETIRED OPTIONS — only offered during the COVID-19 Pandemic

We will offer the following programs on a month-by-month basis virtually. Please note that Coding already was and will remain virtual for the Academic Year. All other regular programs will pivot back to in-person options only once we can safely resume classes. The Book Clubs will cease once we return to in-person classes. See below for updated “Virtual” class descriptions.

Some virtual classes may require light materials such as paper, pencils/crayons, and the ability to print materials. Chromebooks are available to borrow with a $75 refundable deposit.

These options begin December 1, 2020 and will continue on this schedule virtually.

Some Class Descriptions

Tortoise Book Club
Each month we will pick a book to feature for the month and we will ask students to read their book or listen to it on audio several chapters at a time before class each week. During class, key ideas will be introduced and a guided discussion will be led and some fun extension activities like LEGO builds may be incorporated. Learners will be encouraged to draw the story while we talk. Our first book will be discussed in the December 1st class. Some potential options are A Wrinkle in Time (graphic novel edition), The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, Redwall, or other suggestions from the class. Parents should plan to provide the book or audiobook.

Chrysalis Book Club
Each week Mr. Max will read a book to the class and feature an activity afterward. The class will be encouraged to doodle while they listen to the book and to share their drawings afterward. The activities will include ideas to create or get the kids moving in place while participating with friends. Parents will not need to supply the book unless they prefer to do so.

Virtual Skillful Play
This class will stay on course with its original curriculum. Currently, the group is exploring math-themed topics through gameplay, most likely on BoardGameArena.com. By the end of the month, we will switch to our mindful body focus featuring easy to follow instruction for practices like yoga, non-combative martial arts, and other healthy habits.

Virtual Gameschool
Our gameschool group will continue virtually on BoardGameArena.com. Because we have seen an interest in technology use among our youngest class, we will offer a special section for them to practice using technology and playing games as well. Any child who would like to participate must be able to cooperatively focus and to play games on this platform. We will teach them how to use the website and how to play new games. If your student doesn’t already have a Walnut Grove Coop email account, we will work with you to set one up and to register them for their board game arena username.
